The legacy and adventure of 211-year-old USS CONSTITUTION, popularly known as “Old Ironsides,” will visit the Jacksonville, St. Augustine, and St. Mary's area January 29-February 1, 2009, including several free public events through a partnership with The Museum of Science and History .* The innovative educational program, “Old Ironsides” Across the Nation, is a collaborative effort between the USS Constitution Museum and the US Navy. All US Navy and USS Constitution Museum activities are free.
*The ship will not be traveling and remains in the safety of Boston Harbor.

Free Public Presentation: "211 Years Aboard 'Old Ironsides'"

During this free public presentation about the ship’s colorful naval history, the ship’s captain, Commander William A. Bullard, III, and the museum’s president, Burt Logan, will describe USS CONSTITUTION's legacy as an undefeated frigate and explain how she earned the nickname "Old Ironsides.” They will present illustrated commentary on the ship’s history, discuss life aboard “Old Ironsides” today and answer questions from the audience. The audience will discover the USS Constitution Museum’s mission, educational outreach, and hands-on exhibits. There will also be a demonstration of the teamwork required to fire a cannon during battle, using a life-size replica gun deck and long gun.
Free Weekend Activities for the Whole Family
Saturday, January 31, 2009 9am-5pm & Sunday, February 1, 2009 1pm-4pm
Throughout the weekend, visitors can participate in free special activities. Talk with active-duty U.S. Navy Sailors from USS CONSTITUTION who perform hourly demonstrations of the teamwork required to fire a cannon during battle, using a life-size replica gun deck and long gun. USS Constitution Museum staff will discuss what life was like aboard ship over 200 years ago as visitors examine samples of objects used at sea in the age of sail. Family-friendly activities include knot-tying, reading signal flags, dress-up like a crewmember aboard CONSTITUTION, and fun hands-on interactives about life aboard at sea in the 1800s. Meet skilled craftsmen from the Naval History & Heritage Command Detachment Boston who maintain the historic warship, and etch your name on a copper sheet to be installed on CONSTITUTION's hull during a future restoration. |
