David H. Long
Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Liberty Mutual Insurance
David H. Long began his career at the Liberty Mutual Insurance in 1985 and held positions of increasing responsibility in Underwriting, Financial, and Mergers and Acquisitions areas. He also led Liberty’s International and Commercial Insurance strategic business units. Mr. Long was elected President in June 2010, became Chief Executive Officer in June 2011 and was elected Chairman in June 2013.
Under his direction, Liberty Mutual Insurance has grown to become the third-largest P&C insurer in the U.S. and the fifth-largest in the world with $39.6 billion in revenue, more than 50,000 employees and approximately 900 offices worldwide. Mr. Long believes that the character of the people at Liberty drives this success and that the company’s greatest differentiator is its people. Recognizing that the company sells a promise and that only people can deliver on that promise, he’s focused his energies on talent management through hiring, developing and retaining employees and nurturing an inclusive work environment where they can thrive and succeed. He’s also dedicated to ensuring Liberty Mutual is a company where all dimensions of diversity are welcome, a broad array of ideas are encouraged and everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
When it comes to being a corporate citizen, Mr. Long believes Liberty Mutual’s philanthropic giving helps define its culture. Under his leadership, the company’s corporate philanthropy has grown 46%. Through Give with Liberty, the employee giving program, employees and the company contributed over $18 million to more than 8,300 non-profit organizations across the country in 2016. Also in 2016, employees served 108,000 hours through the company’s worldwide employee service program, Serve with Liberty.
Mr. Long also serves as Chairman for the annual fundraiser Aspire, which provides social services and development opportunities for children and young adults on the autism spectrum. In 2014, he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Hartwick College, where he earned a B.A. degree in mathematics from Hartwick College in 1983 and serves on the Board of Trustees.
