Advertisements, proclamations, notices, and opinion pieces used to broadcast the news to the public.
This collection contains broadsides and posters dating from the War of 1812. Broadsides were one-sided, over-sized sheets containing proclamations, announcements, or advertisements. They were publicly posted or distributed door to door. The items in this collection address government policies and decisions, war, fund-raising efforts, and current events. Early nineteenth-century materials respond to British impressment of sailors on American ships and proclamation of war. Particularly notable is a broadside from the Court at Carlton House repealing British Orders in Council, a contributing cause of the War of 1812.
