Official records and intimate accounts of life in the American navy.
The contents of this collection include items largely created by those who served on USS Constitution. Many of the private journals include terms on more than one ship. They relate the daily routine of ship life. Topics include the World Cruise (1844-1846), the Mediterranean cruise (1853-55), and various diagrams and indexes of ship-related work. Several journals contain sketches and watercolors by the creators. The journal of Master Boat Builder John Wade of the Charlestown Navy Yard details materials and work reports for Constitution and other ships. A surgeon’s journal covers time on Constitution and USS New York. The sea journal of Isaac Mayo dates from forty years before his African Squadron command aboard USS Constitution.
