Early Life

James Gardner was born in Harpswell, Maine. His date of birth is not known.

He had a brother, Robert Gardner, who lived in Portland, Maine as of 1818.

Gardner transferred from Gunboat 85 to USS Constitution as an ordinary seaman on July 31, 1812 at Boston, Massachusetts. He served as the third sponger on gun no 6. He transferred from USS Constitution on April, 1813 to the Great Lakes squadron.

Battles and Engagements

Gardner was on board for the battles with HMS Guerriere and HMS Java.

Gardner’s date and place of death are unknown.
