A Salute to Maritime Preservation
Join us for the 38th Annual Model Ship Show Reception & Presentation of the 2016 Don Turner Award!
Given annually for efforts to preserve important vessels or for contributions to our knowledge and understanding of ship design and construction, this year’s Don Turner Award Recipient is Meghan E. Wren-Briggs, Founder and Executive Director of the Bayshore Discovery Project.
Meghan’s youth spent on (and in) the water, her deckhand experience on the 1877 barque Elissa, her work as a crabber and shipwright on Delaware Bay, and her passion for maritime history and the cultural landscape of South Jersey inspired her to start a crusade to restore the historic oyster schooner, A.J. Meerwald. Today, the ship sails proudly as the State of New Jersey’s official tall ship and the Bayshore Discovery Project is a thriving cultural center that tells the rich history of the Delaware Bay, a testament to Meghan’s commitment to maritime historic preservation, community involvement, and hands-on education.
