Forest to Frigate

How and why was USS Constitution built?

After the American Revolution, the young United States needed to protect American interests at sea now that it was free from British reign. But how? President George Washington had a decision to make, and that decision led to the birth of the United States Navy and the original six frigates. Design a ship for the young nation. Meet the people who labored to bring Constitution to life. Test your shipyard skills and learn about the tools used by shipwrights. Follow the story from the forests in which “Old Ironsides’” timbers grew to her launch as a fully formed frigate in 1797.

Exhibit is open during regular Museum hours.
