Making “Old Ironsides” New
No wooden ship, no matter how well built, can exist for more than a few years without significant repairs.
Making Old Ironsides New tells the story of USS Constitution’s constant renewal, from its first repairs in 1801 to the major restoration work completed from 2015 to 2017.
Learn about Charlestown’s Dry Dock 1, a national civil engineering landmark located right outside the Museum’s front doors, and the materials and skilled work needed to preserve “Old Ironsides.” Watch a timelapse video of USS Constitution floating out of dry dock, see ship restorers and riggers at work, and view a selection of souvenirs made of materials from the ship.
