On February 24, 1849, around 9:30 am, Constitution Stewart McCauley was born on board USS Constitution after a 1000-mile voyage! The newborn McCauley bore the name of the ship and one of Constitution’s most famous captains, Charles Stewart, who was also his great-uncle. ⚓ 🌊

The baby's father, Daniel, and his pregnant wife, Frances, along with their children, a servant, and all their household belongings, boarded USS Constitution in Tripoli on January 21, 1849. The ship was transporting McCauley to Alexandria, Egypt, where he was to become the first U.S. consul general to Egypt. They headed first to Malta, a regular Mediterranean port stop for Constitution. After two weeks, Constitution began the roughly 1,000-mile voyage east to Alexandria, Egypt.

The baby was born while waiting for a local pilot to guide the ship to anchorage in Alexandria's harbor. The only record of Constitution Stewart McCauley’s birth on board is a notation in the ship’s log and Gwinn’s correspondence to the Secretary of the Navy.

Closing out this St. Patrick's Day with a salute to George Campbell Read, who served onboard USS Constitution three times in his career, including during the victory over HMS Guerriere.

☘️ Born in Ireland and immigrating to the United States as a child, Read's journey led him to USS Constitution three times! ⚓️ He first joined the ship as a midshipman in February 1809 and was promoted to lieutenant. After leaving to command the bomb ketch Vesuvius, Read returned to participate in the triumph over HMS Guerriere during the War of 1812. 🇺🇸

Read went on to command the East India Squadron, hunting Sumatran pirates. He also served on several Mediterranean Squadrons on USS Constellation and USS United States. Later in life, he served as commandant of the Philadelphia Navy Yard and Philadelphia Naval Asylum.⚓
