Rank(s): Unknown

Dates of Service: 8/8/1813 - 6/12/1815

Early Life

Artemas Johnson’s place and date of birth are not known.

Johnson entered USS Constitution on August 8, 1813 at Boston, Massachusetts. It is unclear what his original rank was, but he does not appear to have received his commission as a surgeon’s mate until December 10, 1814. He was transferred to ex-HMS Levant as part of the prize crew on February 21, 1815 at sea. Consequently, he was among the crew taken prisoner when Levant was retaken. He was returned to Baltimore, Maryland on cartel on May 8, 1815. Johnson resigned on June 12, 1815 and was discharged on June 24.

Battles and Engagements

Johnson was on board for the battle HMS Cyane and HMS Levant, and the capture of HMS Pictou.

Johnson’s date and place of death are unknown.
