Assheton Yorke Humphreys

Early Life

Assheton Yorke Humphrey is believed to have been born in 1790 in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, but his U.S. Navy service record indicated that he had been born in 1797 in Pennsylvania.

Humphreys transferred from USS Constellation to USS Constitution on May 26, 1813 at Norfolk, Virginia. His rank was captain’s clerk. On June 1, 1814, he was appointed acting chaplain. Humphreys received a commission as purser on July 22, 1815. Humphreys transferred from USS Constitution to USS Prometheus on August 17, 1815. His rank was acting purser.

Battles and Engagements

Humphreys was on board for the battles with HMS Cyane, HMS Levant, and HMS Pictou.

Between 1816 and 1823, he served as purser on board USS Washington, USS United States, USS Alligator, and USS Peacock. Humphreys died from pulmonary disease on February 6, 1826 in Callao, Peru.
