Early Life

Charles O. Brown was born in 1788 in Virginia.

Early Experience

Brown joined the navy as a marine private on May 5, 1809 in Norfolk, Virginia.

Brown transferred from Gosport Navy Yard to USS Constitution on July 1, 1812 at the Washington Navy Yard. He was initially on the larboard watch, assigned to the fore top. He was promoted to corporal in February 1813. He appears to have attempted to desert in May 1813, but was apprehended 15 days later. In 1814 he was listed as being assigned to the main top. On June 25, 1815 he was detached to USS Independence.

Battles and Engagements

Brown was one of few crew on board Constitution for all her major battles during the War of 1812. He received a portion of the prize money for the battles with HMS Guerriere , Java , Cyane and Levant .

Brown’s date and place of death are unknown.
