Early Life

Charles Preble Derby was born on August 17, 1794 in Salem, Massachusetts. He was the son of Samuel and Margaret Derby and had one sister, Margaret.

Derby joined Constitution ’s crew as a midshipman on October 3, 1813. In 1814, he was assigned to gun no. 8, assistant officer-in-charge as a part of the quarterdeck division. Derby was a part of the prize crew of ex-HMS Levant . On March 11, 1813, he and the crew were taken prisoner by a British squadron in Porto Praya. He was released and returned to Baltimore, Maryland. He was discharged on May 16, 1815.

Battles and Engagements

Derby participated in the battles with HMS Cyane and HMS Levant and received $126.93 in prize money.

Derby was ordered to USS Washington on January 23, 1816. He died in March 1821. His place of death is unknown.
