Early Life

McDonnell’s date and place of birth are unknown.

It is not known when McDonnell first joined Constitution ’s crew, but he was discharged on April 3, 1811. He reentered on April 13 as an able seaman and remained on board until sometime after February 17, 1813.

Battles and Engagements

During his time on board, the ship patrolled the American coast enforcing US trade laws, and later the ship made a diplomatic voyage to France and Holland. McDonnell participated in the battles against HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812 and HMS Java on December 29, 1812, and he received $42.62 ½ and $42.30 in prize money for the victories. His station during the second battle was no. 8 carronade on the quarterdeck where he served as first sponger.
