George Mitchell

Rank(s): Ordinary Seaman

Dates of Service: 4/20/1811 - 9/23/1812

Early Life

Mitchell’s date and place of birth are unknown.

Mitchell enlisted as an ordinary seaman on April 20, 1811 at Boston and joined Constitution the same day. On September 23, 1812, while on liberty ashore, Mitchell enlisted in the army to receive the $8 bounty offered by recruiters. He was discovered a short time later and brought back to the ship. He was discharged, but not before receiving 12 lashes for desertion and being confined on gunboat 58.

Battles and Engagements

During his time on board, the ship made a diplomatic voyage to France and Holland. He later participated in the victory over HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812, but because he deserted, he presumably forfeited the $42.62 ½ in prize money due him.

Mitchell’s date and place of death are unknown.
