Early Life
Gustavus Newman was born in 1786 in Sweden.
Newman was married to Mary Newman, also from Sweden. They had a daughter Elizabeth A. Newman, born in 1836.
Newman entered USS Constitution on November 19, 1811 at Portsmouth, England. His rank was able seaman. He was discharged on November 24, 1813. In 1813, he was promoted to quarter gunner, and later, gunner. He was the first captain of the no. 12 gun.
Battles and Engagements
Newman was on board for the battles with HMS Guerriere and HMS Java.
Newman died on May 2, 1852 in Brooklyn, New York.
