Somers entered USS Constitution as an able seaman on June 26, 1812 at Annapolis, Maryland. He served as first sponger on gun no. 2 and later moved to gun no. 1 where he worked the train tackle. He was discharged on June 17, 1814.

Somers was on board for the battles with HMS Guerriere and HMS Java.
