Ellis’ place and date of birth are unknown.

Ellis enlisted in the US Navy on June 29, 1812. He joined Constitution ’s crew as an ordinary seaman on July 3, 1812 while the ship lay at anchor off Annapolis, Maryland. He left the ship sometime after February 17, 1813.

Battles and Engagements

Ellis participated in the defeats of HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812 and HMS Java on December 29, 1812, receiving $42.62 ½ and $42.30 in prize money for the victories. He passed powder to carronade no. 4 on the forecastle during the second battle.
