James Ellwell’s place and date of birth are not known.
Ellwell entered USS Constitution as an able seaman on August 31, 1813 at Boston, Massachusetts. He was on the larboard watch, assigned to the fore top station. In battle, he served as second loader and a sponger on the no. 5 carronade. He was discharged on August 19, 1815.

Ellwell was on board for the battle with HMS Cyane and HMS Levant.
Ellwell’s date and place of death are unknown.
