Hatton’s place and date of birth are unknown.

Early Experience

Hatton enlisted in the US Navy on April 15, 1809 and serve on the USS President until the summer of 1810. He appears to have served under the false name of John Stowe until July 1812.

Seaman James Hatton was transferred to the Constitution from USS President on June 17, 1810 while the ship lay in Hampton Roads, Virginia. His enlistment ran out in early 1811 and he re-enlisted on April 15, 1811. He was rated a quarter gunner August 25, 1811.

Battles and Engagements

Hatton participated in Constitution ’s victory over HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812 but deserted on September 26, 1812, after the ship returned to Boston. By deserting he forfeited his share of $50,000 in prize money.

Hatton’s place and date of death are unknown.
