Higgs’ date and place of birth are unknown.

Ordinary Seaman James Higgs was transferred to Constitution from USS Wasp on July 27, 1811. He left the ship sometime after February 17, 1813.

Battles and Engagements

During his service, the ship patrolled the Atlantic coast enforcing US trade laws and conducted a diplomatic mission to northern Europe. He participated in the victories over HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812 and HMS Java on December 29, 1812, receiving $42.62 ½ and $42.30 in prize money. During battle, his station was No. 3 long gun where he served as the 2nd loader.
