James Smith’s place and date of birth are not known.
Smith reported to USS Constitution as a boatswain’s mate on May 20, 1812 at Washington Navy Yard. He was first captain of the no. 7 gun crew. He reported ill for a week beginning on May 27, 1812 after falling and hurting his back. He was discharged on February 27, 1813.
