Early Life

James Sterret was born around 1782 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Early Experience

Prior to joining the Marine Corps, Sterret worked as a laborer. Sterret enlisted on November 2, 1810 at New Orleans as a Marine private. He deserted on May 19, 1811 and was returned on May 21, 1812. He transfered from USS Syren at the Charlestown Navy Yard on July 3, 1813.

Prior was 5 feet, 11 inches tall with blue eyes, a light complexion, and light hair.

Sterret entered USS Constitution on August 13, 1813 at Boston, Massachusetts as a Marine private. He departed USS Constitution on July 25, 1815. Sterret later returned to USS Constitution in April, 1821 as Marine private, and was promoted to master-at-arms on October 4, 1821. He detached from USS Constitution on July 12, 1828 at Boston, Massachusetts.

Battles and Engagements

Sterret was on board for the battle with HMS Cyane and HMS Levant.

Sterret’s date and place of death are unknown.
