Thompson entered USS Constitution as an able seaman on June 22, 1813 at Boston, Massachusetts. He was on the larboard watch, assigned to the main top and the no. 7 gun crew. He transferred to ex-HMS Cyane on February 20, 1815.

Thompson was on board for the battle with HMS Cyane and HMS Levant.
