John Achilles Kearney

Early Life

John Achilles Kearney was born on June 21, 1793 in Ireland. His father was also named John Kearney.

Kearney had two brothers, Robert and James. He married Mary Martha Forrest on December 3, 1835 in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. They had a son, Richard Forrest Kearney, born in 1841.

Kearney received commission on March 3, 1809. His rank was surgeon mate. He served on USS John Adams and USS Enterprize before being promoted to surgeon on July 24, 1813. Kearney transferred to USS Constitution on June 11, 1814 at Boston, Massachusetts and departed on September 10, 1815.

Battles and Engagements

Kearney was on board for the battle with HMS Cyane and HMS Levant.

Kearney served on USS Delaware in 1827. He was appointed Surgeon of the fleet on November 3, 1828 in the Mediterranean. He served at several military bases in Florida and the Gulf of Mexico during the 1830s. He died from yellow fever on August 27, 1847 in Salamandina, Mexico
