John Demarest

Early Life

Demarest was born in 1781 in Hackensack, New Jersey. He made his living as a farmer.

Early Experience

At his enlistment in 1811, Demarest stood 6 feet, 3 inches high, and had a dark complexion, dark hair, and blue eyes.

Demarest enlisted for five years as a private in the United States Marine Corps at New York on September 26, 1811. He was transferred from the Marine Barracks at Boston, Massachusetts, to Constitution on September 10, 1813. He transferred back to the Navy Yard on June 4, 1814.

Battles and Engagements

During his time on board, Constitution sailed on a war cruise, capturing a small British man-of-war and three merchantmen.

Demarest served out his five-year enlistment in the Marines and received his discharge on March 3, 1816.
