John Hall

Rank(s): Quartermaster

Dates of Service: 7/27/1811 - 2/17/1813

Early Life

Hall’s date and place of birth are unknown.

Hall joined Constitution ’s crew on July 27, 1811 while the ship lay at the Washington Navy Yard. He had served as a quartermaster on USS Hornet and maintained that rank. He was discharged on May 16, 1812, but reenlisted the next day as an able seaman. There is no record of misconduct to explain Hall’s shift to able seaman; the captain had probably already filled all the quartermaster billets. Hall was finally discharged on February 17, 1813.

Battles and Engagements

Hall was on board during the battle with HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812. During the battle with HMS Java , he was stationed in the main top. He received $42.62 ½ and $42.30 in prize money respectively for each victory.

Hall’s place and date of death are unknown.
