John Leonard

Rank(s): Able Seaman

Dates of Service: 6/9/1812 - 6/3/1814

Early Life

Leonard’s place and date of birth are unknown. Beginning November 1, 1812, Leonard authorized an allotment of $6 per month to John Roach for 18 months. Sailors typically gave allotments to dependent family members. It is not known if Roach was related to Leonard, but it is possible that he was a landlord or other person to whom Leonard was indebted.

Seaman John Leonard reported to Constitution on June 9, 1812 at the Washington Navy Yard. He was discharged at Boston, Massachusetts on June 3, 1814.

Battles and Engagements

Leonard participated in the battles with HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812 and HMS Java on December 29, 1812. He received $42.62 ½ and $42.30 prize money for the victories. He also participated in a subsequent war cruise in 1814 during which Constitution captured one small British man-of-war schooner and three merchantmen.

Leonard’s place and date of death are unknown.
