Early Life
Miller’s date and place of birth are unknown. Miller had an allotment of some unknown amount (probably $6 per month) delivered to one James Miller, but his relationship to the sailor is not known.
Miller enlisted on June 6, 1812 and joined Constitution ’s crew as an able seaman on June 22, 1812, while the ship lay at Annapolis, Maryland. He deserted at Boston on June 18, 1813.
Battles and Engagements
Miller participated in the battles against HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812 and HMS Java on December 29, 1812, but by deserting he forfeited his share of the prize money. During the second engagement he served as shotman for gun no. 13 on the gun deck.
