Pope enlisted in the US Navy on June 26, 1812 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He joined Constitution ’s crew as an able seaman on July 3, 1812 while the ship lay at Annapolis, Maryland. He was discharged on June 26, 1814 at Boston, Massachusetts.

Battles and Engagements

Pope participated in victories over HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812 and HMS Java on December 29, 1812, receiving $42.62 ½ and $42.30 in prize money for the victories. In 1812, he attended the main preventer braces and main top bowlines. He was on board when Constitution captured a British man-of-war schooner and three merchant vessels. In 1814, he served as third sponger to gun no. 1 on the gun deck.
