Early Life

John Sandy was born on April 10, 1774 in New Hampshire to Robert and Mary (Locke) Saunders.

He had a brother, William Saunders. On April 4, 1799 he married Lydia Chapman in Epsom, New Hampshire.

Early Experience

Sandy entered USS Hornet as an able seaman on April 5, 1811 at New York, New York.

He transferred to USS Constitution as an able seaman on June 6, 1811 at Washington, D.C. He was discharged on July 30, 1812.

Sandy’s service record after Constitution is unclear, but at some point, he joined the Lake Erie Squadron, and was on the prize crew of the captured HMS Lady Prevost. He served on USS Lawrence at the Battle of Lake Erie, and was on the USS Caledonian after the battle. He was discharged as a result of injury sometime late in 1813. Sandy died on June 21, 1848 in Epsom, New Hampshire.
