Joseph Holmstead was born in 1782 in Mount Desert, Maine.
On his enlistment, he was described as 5′ 6.25″ tall, with grey eyes, black hair and a dark complexion.
Holmstead enlisted in the Marines on July 8, 1813 at Charlestown. His rank was private. Holmstead entered USS Constitution in September 1813. He was discharged on June 9, 1814. He deserted, was returned, then deserted a second time on August 30, 1814.
