Johnson’s place and date of birth are unknown.

Ordinary Seaman Joseph Johnson enlisted in the Navy on July 2, 1812 and joined Constitution on July 10, 1812 while the ship lay in Hampton Roads Virginia. In April 1813 he was among a draft of men sent to Sackets Harbor, New York.

Battles and Engagements

He participated in victories over HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812 and HMS Java on December 29, 1812, receiving $42.62 ½ and $42.30 in prize money for the victories. His battle station in 1812 was at no. 3 carronade on the forecastle, where he worked the train tackle to run the gun in and out.
