Janes entered USS Constitution as an able seaman in December, 1812. He was on the larboard watch, assigned to the main top station. He was promoted on July 6, 1814 to boatswain’s yeoman. Janes was discharged on June 15, 1815 at Boston, Massachusetts.

Janes was on board for the battles with HMS Pictou, HMS Cyane and HMS Levant.
