Early Life

Rue’s place and date of birth are unknown.

Rue enlisted in the US Navy at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 26, 1812. He joined Constitution ’s crew as an able seaman on July 3, 1812 while the ship was anchored off Annapolis, Maryland. He was transferred from the ship in April 1813.

Battles and Engagements

Rue participated in victories over HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812 and HMS Java on December 29, 1812, receiving $42.62 ½ and $42.30 in prize money for the victories. During the second battle, he served as 3rd loader on gun no. 3 on the gun deck.

In April 1813 Rue was transferred to the US squadron at Sackets Harbor, New York.
