Early Life

Joseph Twiss was born on June 10, 1789 in Danvers, Massachusetts. He was the son of Joseph and Mary Twiss.

Early Experience

Prior to joining the Marine Corps, Twiss worked as a cabinet maker. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on May 4, 1813 at Charlestown. His rank was Marine private. He transferred to USS Chesapeake on May 17, 1812, and was wounded in battle on June 1, 1813.

Twiss was 5 feet, 7 inches tall with blue eyes, a light complexion, and dark brown hair.

Twiss entered USS Constitution on September 17, 1813 at Boston, Massachusetts. His rank was Marine private. He was promoted to Marine corporal on January 1, 1815 and departed USS Constitution on July 28, 1815.

Battles and Engagements

Twiss was on board for the battle with HMS Cyane and HMS Levant.

Twiss was discharged on July 16, 1818 at New York. His date and place of death are unknown.
