Early Experience

Hayes joined the navy as a seaman on June 7, 1809. He was appointed armorer on USS President on May 11, 1810.

Hayes joined Constitution ’s crew as armorer on June 17, 1810 while the ship lay in Hampton Roads, VA. He left the ship sometime after February 17, 1813.

Battles and Engagements

During his time on board, the ship made a diplomatic voyage to northern Europe. Haycock participated in victories over HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812 and HMS Java on December 29, 1812, and shared $100,000 prize money with the crew. During the second engagement, he attended the main magazine passage to oversee the smooth and rapid transfer of powder from the magazine to the gun deck.
