Melson’s date and place of birth are unknown.

Melson was recruited in Norfolk, Virginia by Lieutenant Charles W. Morgan on June 24, 1812. He joined Constitution ’s crew as an ordinary seaman on July 2, 1812 while the ship lay at Annapolis, Maryland.

Battles and Engagements

McLaughlin participated in the battles against HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812 and HMS Java on December 29, 1812, and received $42.62 ½ and $42.30 in prize money for the victories. During the second battle, he fought at gun no. 5 on the gun deck, where he served as second sponger.
