Johnson entered USS Constitution on March 16, 1812 at Norfolk, Virginia. His rank was ordinary seaman. He deserted USS Constitution on April 22, 1812 at Washington Navy Yard. He re-entered USS Constitution on August 16, 1813 as able seaman. Johnson was discharged on August 12, 1815 at Boston, Massachusetts.

Johnson was on board for the battle HMS Cyane and HMS Levant, and the capture of HMS Pictou.
