Early Life

Richard Smith was born in 1786 in Cecil County, Maryland.

Early Experience

He was a blacksmith before joining the Marines.

On his enlistment, Smith was described as being 5 feet 5.25 inches tall, with blue eyes, dark brown hair and a sallow complexion.

Smith enlisted as a private in the Marines on March 11, 1812 at Philadelphia. He transferred to USS Constitution on October 17, 1812 at Boston, Massachusetts. He detached on July 28, 1815 to served on USS Enterprize. Smith was discharged on April 30, 1817.

Battles and Engagements

Smith was on board for the battle with HMS Cyane and HMS Levant.

Smith’s date and place of death are unknown.
