Early Life

Saunders’ place and date of death are unknown. Beginning on February 1, 1814, Saunders gave an allotment of $6 per month to a woman named Elizabeth Saunders. This was probably his wife, but could also be a mother or sister.

Saunders, an able seaman, was transferred to Constitution from USS Hornet on July 27, 1811. He reenlisted on July 6, 1813 as an able seaman and was discharged on July 6, 6 1815.

Battles and Engagements

He participated in the battles with HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812 and HMS Java on December 29, 1812. He received $42.62 ½ and $42.30 in prize money for the victories. During the second battle he served as first loader to gun no. 10 on the gun deck. Saunders was also on board for the February 20, 1812 battle with HMS Cyane and HMS Levant . During that engagement he fought at the same station.
