Vermilion enlisted on June 7, 1809. His rank was Marine private. He entered USS Constitution a marine drummer on June 11, 1812 at the Washington Navy Yard. He deserted on December 28, 1813 at Boston, Massachusetts.

Vermilion was on board for the battle with HMS Guerriere.
Vermilion re-enlisted as a Marine drummer on May 30, 1814. He was discharged on March 5, 1817. His date and place of death are unknown.
