Hamlin entered USS Constitution on June 1, 1813 at Boston, Massachusetts. His rank was able seaman. On October 1, 1814, he was promoted to boatswain’s mate. Hamlin was discharged on June 10, 1815.

Hamlin was on board for the battle with HMS Cyane and HMS Levant.
