Thomas Lawrence

Rank(s): Quartermaster

Dates of Service: 6/6/1812 - 2/17/1813

Early Life

Lawrence’s date and place of birth are unknown.

Early Experience

Lawrence must have gone to sea at an early age, because by the War of 1812 he was able to assume a role reserved for the most experienced sailors.

Lawrence enlisted on June 6, 1812 and reported for duty to Constitution on June 22, 1812 at the Washington Navy Yard. He left the ship sometime after February 17, 1813.

Battles and Engagements

Lawrence served on board during the battles with HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812 and the Java on December 29, 1812. During the second battle, he attended the relieving tackles, pulleys designed to turn the rudder if the ship’s wheel was shot away (as it was during the battle).

Lawrence’s place and date of death are unknown.
