Smith had been a laborer be he enlisted as a private in the Marines on October 25, 1810 at New York. He was promoted and demoted back and forth between private and corporal twice between November 12, 1811 and June 9, 1813.

On his enlistment, Smith was described as being 5 feet 5.5 inches tall, with light colored eyes, dark hair and a ruddy complexion.

Smith entered USS Constitution on August 13, 1813 at Boston, Massachusetts. Smith departed USS Constitution on June 9, 1815 at Boston, Massachusetts.

Smith’s date and place of death are unknown.
