Early Life

Hamilton’s place and date of birth are unknown.

Hamilton enlisted in the Navy on April 26, 1812 and joined Constitution ’s crew on 30 April while the ship lay at the Washington Navy Yard. He was rated an able seaman, but was demoted to ordinary seaman on July 1, 1812. He left the ship on September 3, 1812.

Battles and Engagements

Hamilton participated in the victory over HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812, receiving $42.62 ½ prize money. On September 3, 1812 he volunteered to augment Commodore John Rodgers’ squadron when battle with a British squadron appeared imminent, but no battle occurred.
