Early Life

William Holmes was born in 1776.

Holmes enlisted in the Marine Corps on June 29, 1811 at Philadelphia. His rank was private. He entered USS Constitution on June 11, 1812. He was wounded in his right hand during the battle with HMS Cyane and HMS Levant. It eventually proved to be disabling. Holmes departed USS Constitution on June 12, 1815 at Boston, Massachusetts, and was discharged from the Marines on January 31, 1816.

Battles and Engagements

Holmes was on board for the battles with HMS Guerriere, HMS Java, HMS Cyane and HMS Levant, and the capture of HMS Pictou.

Holmes’s date and place of death are unknown.
