USS Constitution High School Essay Contest invites Students to offer Personal Reflection; Win Coveted Spot on 2023 Underway

CHARLESTOWN, MA (November 2, 2022)—The USS Constitution Museum, in collaboration with USS Constitution, invites high school students to write an essay to celebrate the spirit of “Old Ironsides” and how her mission can apply to their lives, in their own words. First prize includes a chance to join the Ship on a cruise in Boston Harbor in 2023.

USS Constitution is more than “the oldest commissioned warship afloat.” She is also a respected national symbol, appointed as America’s “Ship of State.” This designation honors her role representing the United States as a symbol of democracy and freedom around the world. With this in mind, we invite students in the U.S., grades 9-12, to imagine, “What if you were a Ship of State? What would your mission be, and how could you live that out? What would this responsibility mean for how you live, leading yourself and setting an example for others?”

This essay contest continues in the long line of tradition for reflection and writing about Constitution. Throughout her history, crew and visitors alike captured thoughts about their experiences in writing; including her launch in 1797, fame in the War of 1812, and her first female captain in 2022. The crew understands and explores the Ship’s role as inspirational “ambassador” and representative of our country, democracy, and freedom by putting pen to paper in creative ways.

Students in grades 9-12, from a public, private, parochial, or home schooled, are encouraged to submit their essay following the guidelines provided, by February 28, 2023. The judges, comprised of USS Constitution crew members, Museum staff, and community members, will evaluate essays using a consistent set of criteria and guidelines with cash prizes for the top three winners.
