“Veterans with Paws” Virtual Event to Explore the Lives and Legacies of Military K-9s and Their Handlers
CHARLESTOWN, MA (November 6, 2020)—The USS Constitution Museum and the country’s first national humane organization, American Humane, will host Veterans with Paws: A Look at the Past, Present, and Future of Military Working Dogs, a free virtual panel discussion on Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11 at 4 p.m. ET.
Military working dogs (MWDs) are an essential component of America’s Armed Forces. Canines provide invaluable contributions that protect human troops and, in the process, form unbreakable bonds. This online program will give viewers a firsthand look at the lives and legacy of MWDs and their handlers.
“The USS Constitution Museum is proud to partner with American Humane this Veterans Day,” said Anne Grimes Rand, USS Constitution Museum President and CEO. “Military working dogs have played a crucial role in the Armed Forces ever since a little terrier, named Guerriere, ‘served’ on board USS Constitution during the War of 1812. We’re delighted to have this opportunity to honor these dogs and share their stories.”
“We are excited to provide an educational opportunity to everyone interested in learning more about our nation’s courageous military K-9s,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of American Humane. “American Humane has a rich legacy of supporting the U.S. military and military animals for 105 years and we couldn’t be prouder to help showcase the power of the human-animal bond, which is exemplified by MWDs and their handlers.”
Program topics include:
- USS Constitution Museum will discuss Constitution’s working dog, Guerriere the Terrier.
- Active U.S. military personnel, a veteran, and their service dogs speak to the role our K-9 friends play in the Armed Forces.
- American Humane discusses getting these beloved battle buddies back home after retirement.
The program is appropriate and open for viewers of all ages.
Speakers include:
- Anne Grimes Rand, President & CEO, USS Constitution Museum
- Aaron Stice and MWD Kkeaton
- Charles Ogin and MWD Rrobiek
- Brendan Cabey (ret.) and MWD Ramos [Note: In September, American Humane helped reunite Sgt. Brendan Cabey, a Marine Corps veteran, with MWD Ramos, his battle buddy, in front of USS Constitution.]
- Lesa Staubus, Veterinarian, American Humane
Registration is required for this free Zoom program. Additional information is also available on the Museum’s website.
This event has been made possible thanks to the Institute of Museum and Library Services and a National Endowment for the Humanities: CARES Act Grant.
