Image Licensing
The USS Constitution Museum is committed to providing access to its collections for research and learning. Images of objects on this website can be downloaded for educational, personal, and non-commercial use in accordance with the Creative Commons license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) and the Terms and Conditions of this website. As a courtesy, please include the credit line “USS Constitution Museum Collection,” as well as the original image URL, when citing images of objects from the collection.
Researchers are welcome to submit requests for digital images of objects from the collection not found on this website using the form below. All digital images are provided at the discretion of the museum. Materials may not be commercially reproduced, published, sold, or distributed, unless written permission is granted by the museum. If the object does not have an existing digital file, scanning or new photography fees will be applied. Deliverables will be sent via email or Dropbox. The museum reserves the right to refuse any request.

PAYMENT
The USS Constitution Museum must receive payment for any scanning or new photography fees before services are rendered. Payments are non-refundable. Checks must be made payable to the USS Constitution Museum. Please indicate the nature of the service provided in the memo line. Credit card payments may be made over the phone. Cash cannot be accepted.
Copyright
The Museum will only provide copies and/or grant reproduction permission for materials of which the Museum is the copyright holder or for which there are no intellectual property rights restrictions. The copyright law of the United States (United States Code, Title 17) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries, and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be used “for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

An object credit line must include a descriptive caption and “USS Constitution Museum Collection.” Donor credit and photographer credit must be added when applicable.

All requests to commercially publish and/or distribute reproductions of objects in the USS Constitution Museum’s collection must be submitted using the form below. The museum reserves the right to refuse any request. If an object does not have an existing digital file, scanning or new photography fees will be applied. Permission to publish will be granted after a Rights & Licensing Agreement is signed and payment is received in full. Deliverables will be sent via email or Dropbox.
A Rights & Licensing Agreement grants permission for a one-time, non-exclusive use of the material in one language. Any different or subsequent use is subject to approval, and
must be applied for using the form below. For the purposes of the Rights & Licensing Agreement, a single edition is defined as having a single physical format, a single date of production, and a single market. Any change in content constitutes a separate edition. Revised editions, foreign language editions, or other format changes, except for a paperback or eBook version of the original edition, will be subject to additional fees per format. Payment must be received in full before permission to publish can be granted. A gratis copy of the publication containing the reproduction should be sent to the Museum immediately after publication.

The USS Constitution Museum welcomes location filming in the galleries. If you are shooting a film, documentary, interview, or student production in the Museum, you must first obtain permission to proceed. This allows us to schedule staff time and make other preparations to accommodate requests. To submit a request, please fill out the form below with at least 3 weeks prior notice. Requests for same-day filming or photography will not be granted.
Permission to film at the USS Constitution Museum is dependent upon staff availability and agreement to these terms:
1. All requests must be submitted in writing at least 3 weeks prior to filming.
2. Filming must be supervised by Museum staff and may require scheduling outside of public hours.
3. Objects may not be touched. Some objects may not be filmed due to donor request or copyright restrictions.
4. Film crew is responsible for any damage incurred to the exhibits.
5. The Museum must evaluate each request on a case-by-case basis to determine availability and fees.
6. A Filming Agreement must be signed prior to filming.
7. Authorization will be granted when the filming agreement is completed and signed and payment is received in full.
8. The USS Constitution Museum must receive the following credit line: “USS Constitution Museum, Boston, Massachusetts.”
